Venezuela Arrests 6, US Denies Assassination Plot

Venezuela Arrests 6: Venezuelan authorities have arrested six foreign nationals, including three Americans, two Spaniards, and one Czech citizen, accusing them of being involved in a plot to assassinate President Nicolás Maduro. Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello announced that these individuals were part of a CIA-led plan to overthrow the government and eliminate its leadership. Weapons reportedly linked to the plot were displayed during the announcement.

The U.S. government strongly denied any involvement in the alleged conspiracy, calling the claims “categorically false.” A U.S. State Department spokesperson reiterated America’s support for a democratic resolution to Venezuela’s political crisis. Among the arrested is an American Navy SEAL, Wilbert Joseph Castañeda Gomez, who served in various countries, including Afghanistan and Colombia.

This development follows heightened tensions between Venezuela and the U.S., particularly after recent U.S. sanctions against 16 Venezuelan officials accused of obstructing voting in the July 2024 election. These sanctions are part of ongoing pressure on the Maduro administration, which the U.S. accuses of human rights violations and election fraud. Meanwhile, Venezuela has been facing internal protests and political unrest since the disputed election results, with Maduro’s victory being questioned by the opposition and international observers.

The Venezuelan government has a history of using high-profile detentions, especially of American citizens, as leverage in its negotiations with the U.S. This latest incident may further strain the already fraught relations between the two nations.
