UN Summit – PM Modi Urges Global Institution Reforms
PM Modi Urges Global Institution Reforms: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the United Nations ‘Summit of the Future’ in New York on September 23, 2024, called for comprehensive reforms in global institutions to ensure global peace and development. Stressing that the strength of humanity lies in unity rather than warfare, Modi emphasized the urgent need for these changes to maintain relevance in today’s complex world.
Speaking to an international audience, PM Modi indirectly referenced ongoing global conflicts, including the war between Russia and Ukraine, and the Israel-Hamas situation, stating, “The success of humanity lies in our collective strength, not in the battlefield.”
Reforms for Global Peace and Development
Modi highlighted that reforming global institutions like the United Nations is essential for sustaining peace and ensuring balanced development worldwide. He pointed to the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member of the G-20 during the New Delhi Summit as a significant step toward reshaping international frameworks for inclusivity and relevance.
The UN’s ‘Summit of the Future,’ held on September 22-23, saw the adoption of the Pact for the Future, an action plan addressing key 21st-century challenges. The Pact includes agreements like the Global Digital Compact and the Declaration on Future Generations, focusing on topics such as UN reform, digital cooperation, and human rights. Modi called for the expansion of permanent members in the UN Security Council, advocating for representation from India, Africa, and other regions to reflect the geopolitical realities of today.
Focus on Emerging Threats and Digital Governance
In his address, Modi acknowledged emerging threats in domains such as cyber, maritime, and space, noting that while terrorism remains a significant concern, these areas are becoming new theaters of conflict. He urged the global community to prioritize digital governance to ensure the protection of national security and integrity.
“India is ready to share its digital public infrastructure with the entire world,” Modi said, positioning India as a leader in promoting digital cooperation.
Engagement with World Leaders
During his three-day visit to the United States, Modi held meetings with key international leaders. Notably, he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and expressed India’s support for peace and dialogue in the ongoing conflict. Modi also met Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh Abbas, where he conveyed concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, further emphasizing India’s proactive role in global peace efforts.
Modi’s speech at the UN underscored India’s consistent call for reform in global institutions, reinforcing the country’s commitment to playing a leading role in addressing the world’s most pressing challenges.
