PM Modi Meets Zelensky, facilitating a peaceful and diplomatic solution
PM Modi Meets Zelensky: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a key bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday in New York, marking the second such interaction between the two leaders in just a month. This comes amidst growing global efforts to seek peaceful resolutions to the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
During the meeting, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s stance on facilitating a peaceful and diplomatic solution. He emphasized the need for sincere engagement between all parties to explore innovative solutions that would contribute to restoring peace in the war-torn region. The Indian leader underscored India’s commitment to supporting all possible efforts to bring peace to Ukraine, a nation embroiled in a devastating conflict for more than two years.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
The meeting followed Modi’s landmark visit to Ukraine in August, the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country since establishing diplomatic ties in 1992. Both leaders expressed their commitment to elevating their bilateral relationship from a comprehensive partnership to a strategic one, based on mutual trust and respect.
During their discussions, Modi and Zelensky reaffirmed the importance of upholding international law, particularly the principles enshrined in the UN Charter. They stressed the need for respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all nations, a crucial aspect of the Ukraine conflict.
India’s Role in Global Peace Initiatives
In addition to bilateral discussions, India has been actively involved in global peace initiatives. Earlier in June 2024, India participated in the Summit on Peace in Ukraine, held in Burgenstock, Switzerland. This marked a significant moment in India’s diplomatic efforts, and Zelensky expressed his gratitude for India’s involvement. Modi reiterated India’s readiness to continue contributing to such efforts in the future.
The discussions in New York also highlighted the need for the global community to respect the sovereignty of nations and seek non-violent solutions per international law. Both leaders agreed on the necessity of further bilateral dialogue to address the Ukraine crisis, with India reiterating its support for peaceful resolutions through diplomacy.
Global Concerns Over Ukraine Conflict
The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has sparked global concerns, especially regarding humanitarian crises and the impact on global food and energy security. These concerns were also echoed in a joint statement by the Quad leaders, including PM Modi, who met on September 21. The Quad leaders underscored the importance of a just and lasting peace that respects territorial sovereignty and upholds international law.
The leaders of the Quad, including US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, also emphasized that the use or threat of nuclear weapons is unacceptable. They stressed the need for peaceful dialogue and international cooperation to address the crisis.
PM Modi’s continued engagement with global leaders, including his meetings with President Biden and Zelensky during his three-day US visit, highlights India’s proactive role in addressing global challenges and advocating for peace.
This meeting between Modi and Zelensky is seen as a crucial step in advancing diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict, with India positioning itself as a key player in promoting global peace.
