India Strongly Condemn Iran Supreme Leader Khamenei Remarks on Indian Muslims
India Strongly Condemn Iran Supreme Leader Khamenei Remarks on Indian Muslims. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) strongly disapproved, labeling the remarks “misinformed and unacceptable.” The Iranian leader, in a social media post on the occasion of Islamic Unity Week, referenced the suffering of Muslims in Myanmar, Gaza, and India, calling for global Muslim unity.
In his message, Ayatollah Khamenei stated, “We cannot consider ourselves to be Muslims if we are oblivious to the suffering that a Muslim is enduring in Myanmar, Gaza, India, or any other place,” emphasizing the need for solidarity across Shia and Sunni sects. The message sparked immediate reactions from New Delhi, which advised Iran to focus on its record regarding minorities rather than commenting on India’s internal matters.
India, a multi-religious democracy, has consistently upheld that it protects the rights of all its communities, including Muslims, and ensures equal opportunities for all citizens under its secular framework. The MEA’s statement was clear, urging nations like Iran to “look at their record before making any observations about others.”
The backdrop to these comments includes an ongoing geopolitical situation in West Asia, where tensions between Iran and Israel have escalated. India shares strategic relations with both nations, importing a significant portion of its oil from West Asia while maintaining defense ties with Israel. This complex relationship has led to occasional diplomatic discomfort for India, as it balances its interests in a volatile region.
Despite the friction caused by Khamenei’s remarks, India has longstanding ties with Iran, particularly concerning the Chabahar Port project, which enhances regional connectivity and trade. Both countries also share concerns over regional terrorism, with common interests in stabilizing Afghanistan and countering threats from Pakistan.
The MEA’s sharp response underscores India’s resolve to maintain its domestic and international image as a country where all communities, including minorities, are safeguarded.
