Apple to Switch to OLED Displays from 2025
Apple to Switch to OLED Displays from 2025, all iPhones will have OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) screens, leaving behind the older LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) technology.
This was reported by Japan’s Nikkei newspaper.
OLED displays show brighter colors and sharper images, making them perfect for watching high-quality videos.
Many TV and smartphone makers already use OLEDs for these reasons.
This change means that companies like Japan’s Sharp and Japan Display, which have been making LCD screens for Apple, will no longer be involved in making iPhone screens.
Apple has started ordering OLED displays for the new iPhone SE from companies like BOE Technology in China and LG Display in South Korea.
About ten years ago, Sharp and Japan Display supplied 70% of iPhone screens. However, they only produced LCDs, mainly for the iPhone SE recently, and they don’t mass-produce OLED screens for smartphones.
Apple first used OLED screens in the iPhone X, which came out in 2017, and since then has used OLEDs in its more expensive iPhone models.
This year, Apple also added OLED screens to the latest iPad Pro models.
Sharp, Japan Display, and LG Display didn’t comment on this change, and Apple hasn’t responded to questions from reporters.
